Demetri was our first clue that not everyone actually saw something during their 137 second blackout. Demetri’s first inclination was to assume that if he didn’t see a flash forward, then he must be dead in six months. Others have tried to convince him that there are other options, but this week in “White to Play” Demetri met an officer who also saw nothing, and a little while later she died right in front of him. He finally took it upon himself to post his story on the Mosaic website and within a few minutes he was contacted by a woman who spoke to him on the phone with the Hong Kong skyline behind her. She claimed that in her flash forward she had seen an intelligence report with his name on it, and that it had stated that he was murdered on March 15, 2010. Seems like the end for Demetri…or maybe not.

I’m definitely in the camp of people who don’t think Demetri will be dead.  Several theories are floating around, including the most obvious one which is that the government somehow fakes his death in order to flush out the bad guys.  Others have suggested that Demetri didn’t see anything during his blackout because he wasn’t blacked out and that he may be a part of the conspiracy.  This theory is based mostly on the fact that when Mark awoke Demetri was nowhere to be found.  This does seem odd but him being part of the conspiracy seems mighty thin.

Even after the very first episode the question on my mind was what did Charlie see.  Her comment in the pilot (which was the title of the pilot) was that there were no more good days.  We got a few more clues in the second episode that have taken us a bit further, but we really still don’t know the full picture.  What do we know?  We know that Charlie saw something in her flash forward that allows her to know that she has a very very strong bond to Dylan.  Her reaction to seeing him in the hospital was extreme.  I’d like to assume that Dylan and Charlie actually saw each other in the flash forward, and that in addition to that Dylan saw something that allowed him to know who Olivia was.  We also know that Charlie knows D. Gibbons was a very bad man.  My first thoughts were that she has been taken by him, or that he was hurting her in some way, but that doesn’t seem to fit exactly with the vision that Olivia had.  I have trouble believing that Olivia and Lloyd would be lounging around their bedroom if their kids had been taken.  Granted, there are many scenarios where D. Gibbons could have the kids and Lloyd and Olivia not know it, but it still seems like there may be another way in which Charlie has come to know who D. Gibbons is.

The first major clue from Mark’s flash forward was the name D. Gibbons, with the picture of a burned babydoll next to it, though no direct connection between the two had been made.  With thousands of D. Gibbons across the U.S., the hopes of finding their D. Gibbons seemed like it would be a long and grueling road.  That is until she walked right into their office.  Of course, Dee Dee Gibbons wasn’t their real suspect, but her flash forward led them to Pigeon, Utah and an abandoned doll factory (coincidence?).

Below is the clip as Mark and Demetri entered the factory and got a glimpse of the lovely hacker-room D. Gibbons had set up.  He also uttered the phrase, “He who foresees calamities suffers them twice over.”  It’s an odd biblical sounding phrase who was actually attributed to Beilby Porteus, an Anglican reformer and leading abolitionist in England in the late 1700s.  Whether or not there could be any clues or connections in this, I don’t know, but you can learn more about Porteous here.  There are also screencaps below from the scene.  If you notice anything telling in the photos, let us know in the comments below.

Janis suggests in the pilot episode that they create a website that people around the world can log into and post their flash forward details, and then they can use this information to cross-reference everyones future vision and help them better collect the mosaic pieces that get them eventually to their full picture of April 29, 2010.  Episode 2, tonight, will show us this website, but you don’t have to wait.  In fact, many of you have no doubt already visited the website, JoinTheMosaic.com, which has been live for quite some time now.  This is the exact same website we’ll be seeing in the second episode and you can share your flash forward on this website in an interactive and fun way.

When I first saw the kangaroo my instant reaction was, “well, that was weird.”  It seemed completely out of place and didn’t make a lot of sense.  My initial thoughts were that may it was meant to show us that animals didn’t lose consciousness, or that it simply escaped from a zoo during feeding time while everyone was passed out.  Still, it seems obvious that this scene bears some clue or significance later in the story.

Critics have claimed that the scene is somewhat of a ripoff from Lost, with the sudden and mysterious presence of an animal that doesn’t belong there (such as polar bears on a tropical island) or perhaps it was just a shoutout to Lost (kangaroos / Australia…get it?).

David Goyer admits that originally he just added this scene in because he enjoys these weird types of unexplained things in disaster movies.  But everyone has loved the kangaroo so much that they have now created a subplot that does involve some mystery with the kangaroo and we will be seeing more of that within the first 6 episodes of the season.

Okay, I admit it, I totally missed this one when watching the show the first (and second) time.  At the beginning when Mark comes downstairs Charlie (his daughter) is watching a cartoon.   The cartoon was created by the FlashForward crew and is being called Tim Tim Squirreleo.  They continue to create little Flash animations of this cartoon and Charlie as well as other characters will watch these cartoons in the background of future episodes.  According to Goyer, it will “in tricky ways” connect back to the story this season.  If you don’t pay attention, you’re not missing anything, but if you do pay attention, you might gain a little something extra.

Mark sees himself wearing a friendship bracelet in his flash forward, which seemed obvious to me immediately that it would come from his daughter.  But as the producers explain below, the significance of the bracelet is that it becomes the first item from Mark’s flash forward that actually comes true, proving, in a way, that the images they saw were of their future, though its still unknown if they have any ability to alter that future.

Mark also tells Dimitri about a burned doll photo from his flash forward that had a bullet casing next to the photograph.  The producers are confirming that we will learn more about this doll photo clue in the second episode of the season and that it is an important clue.  Why dolls? Because they’re creepy, of course.

Yet another item from Mark’s flash forward was the text “Blue Hand” written on the board.  So what in the hell does Blue Hands mean?  Well, the producers are promising that this is one of the clues that we get answers to within the first 6 episodes of the series.

The producers also mention that there are a lot of clues in Mark’s flash forward that weren’t pointed out explicitly in the first episode, but those clues still have a purpose and an outcome.  While many of the mysteries will come to close by the end of the first season, there were purposely placed clues that will lead into the second season and possibly beyond, should FlashForward get renewed.

One of the names that Mark sees in his flash forward says D. Gibbons, a possible suspect in the Mosaic investigation.  The plot of the second episode will involve Mark’s investigation in trying to determine who D. Gibbons is and what he can add to this story.

One of Mark’s attackers in his Flash Forward is a masked man with a tattoo of three stars on his arm, reminiscent of a military insignia, making one wonder if this man isn’t a part of (or was at some time a part of) a military organization.

So far FBI Agent Mark Benford has given us the most thorough and clear flash forward images on the show.  There’s no doubt we’ll continue to get more detailed information on the flash forwards of the other characters, but because Benford is heading up the Mosaic investigation, his flash forward is of particular concern.  Below are 45 screen caps taken from his full flashforward that detail some of the more difficult to see images.  In the future hyper Mosaic will be capping these ourselves, but for this first week we’d like to thank FlashForward.pl for the great screencaps.

In quite the self fulfilling prophecy, Mark sees in his FlashForward that the name of the investigation is Mosaic, and therefore suggests that that is what they should call it (a friend of mine prefers to refer to these events as spontaneous happenstance). A mosaic is a collection of images that come together to form one big picture, which is basically what the FBI is trying to do by collecting all of the stories of what everyone saw, giving them one full picture of what April 29, 2010 will look like.

So everyone who blacked out did so for exactly 2 minutes and 17 seconds, but what is the significance of that length of time?  Obviously that’s one of the mysteries of the show but the producers were kind enough to mention that we should tune in for the third episode, which is entitled “137 Sekunden” (137 seconds, which is what 2 minutes and 17 seconds is) to learn more.  The is a definite reason this number was chosen, and this will likely continue to be one of the mysteries explored on the show.  Hear it straight from the producers below.

The FlashForward creators are doing something kind of cool for the casual fan on the street.  While many of us who have followed Lost for years might enjoy searching for and finding mysteriously hidden clues, there are a number of fans who’d much prefer to just read or hear about them.  I know from personal experience working with Sledgeweb’s Lost Stuff that having someone else show me all of the cool stuff I missed can be a lot of fun.  The FlashForward Producers are therefore bringing us Flashcards, which are short, minute to two-minute videos of the creative team giving us some small nugget of information that we may have missed on the show.  We’ll be posting all of the Flashcards on hyper Mosaic so that you don’t have to go searching for it, and writing a short description of what the flashcard is about (in case they ever decide to remove the videos).  So here it goes…

The first flashcard is titled “April 29, 2010.”  This is the date that was given that everyone on the planet flashes forward to in the episode.  It is seen in several places, including Mark’s flash forward.  The fun part of this is that April 29, 2010 will actually fall within season 1 of the show, so we all know going into this that we’ll get an opportunity to see how all of this turns out for the characters.  It also just so happens that April 29, 2010 is a night on which FlashForward will air an episode in the U.S.  The show runners said that this may or may not be a coincidence….um…..I’m going to go with is not a coincidence.  Enjoy.
